The heart of the disc is Bley’s three-part suite, Andando El Tiempo, Bley’s compositional retelling of watching a friend overcome addiction. Pianist Carla Bley, her partner, the bassist Steve Swallow, and saxophonist Andy Sheppard got together in 2016 to record Andando El Tiempo as a follow up to their 2013 disc, Trios. While she started her career solidly in the avant-garde circles that brought her into projects with stalwarts of the genre like Ingrid Laubrock, Tyshawn Sorey, Tom Rainey and Tony Malaby, that hasn’t stopped her from forging connections with other musicians not typically included in that category.” Diatom Ribbons includes contributions from guitarists Nels Cline and Marc Ribot, tenor saxophonist JD Allen in addition to Tony Malaby, Esperanza Spalding and Teri Lynne Carrington. Of her much celebrated 2019 disc, Diatom Ribbons, Troy Dostert wrote, on AllAboutJazz, “To call pianist Kris Davis stylistically omnivorous would seem to be an understatement. The Jazz Journalist Association selected Kris Davis as the composer of the year and pianist of the year in 2020. There’s no better place to start than Kris Davis. In our final program dedicated to women in jazz, celebrating an extended Women’s History Month, we’ll hear from some great pianist / composers. While women have expanded their contributions, women players still excel in both roles and there are an amazing group of women pianists enriching the music today, many of whom are top-flight composers. “These songs came at a time that I was coming to terms with the positives and negatives of medication, as well as the reality of having to gather the mental strength to push through hardship.”Ĭarla Geneve’s “Dog Eared” is out now, while Learn To Like It will be released on April 23rd via Dot Dash Recordings/Remote Control Records, with pre-orders available now.Until recently women in jazz were predominantly singers and pianists. “ very much a way for me to make sense of and explain my emotions to myself,” Geneve explains. The track is set to appear as the midpoint of Geneve’s forthcoming debut album, Learn To Like It, which, while serving as something of a reflection on the young artist’s own life experiences, also presents itself as an exercise in finding strength through vulnerability and raw emotion. Capture a bit of that violence that I mostly stay away from on this record.” It took me a while to finish the music because I really wanted to get it moving a bit more than my other songs. “I dictated the words to ‘dog eared’ into my phone. I had taken some of that recklessness and it felt incredibly nostalgic. “I didn’t really know why but I realised it was because I had been in a room of teenagers playing music with the pure, raw emotion that most people grow out of as you enter adulthood. “I was driving home one night and I felt so excited and full of energy for music, and I guess life in general,” Geneve explains. Inspired by her work as a music teacher, the track sees Geneve harnessing the same enthusiasm showcased by her students. Premiering on triple j’s Good Nights earlier this week, “Dog Eared” is a crushing piece of rock that sits in perfect contrast to recent single, “The Right Reasons”. Another way to think of this is in the specific techniques that companies use, such as cross-indexing, where archived information is, again, brought to a particular user point. This can be thought of as a similar goal to some others that apply in data storage management - to break down silos, to eliminate barriers for information and to disseminate information that is stored in the broadest and most vibrant ways possible. The award-winning 2021 film CODA, about a woman’s relationship with her deaf family members, further increased mainstream awareness of the term. Many codas also report experiencing common challenges, including as part of these interpretation responsibilities or from feeling a sense of isolation from being “between” two worlds.ĭue to their unique situation, codas are also often of significant interest to researchers in various fields, including linguistics, genetics, and psychology. For example, many codas use sign language as a first language, and many codas often act as an interpreter for their parents or guardians. For many of these people, the word coda serves as a useful identifier that helps to bring visibility to their unique experiences, which include navigating the cultures and communities of both deaf and hearing people. The large majority (around 90 percent) of children born to deaf parents are hearing children. The term coda was coined in 1983 by Millie Brother, a child of deaf parents, in the process of founding the support organization Children of Deaf Adults International (CODA International). Along with koda, several other related acronyms follow the same pattern, including goda, for grandchild of deaf adult(s), and soda, for sibling of deaf adult(s). However, it is also used by others outside of these communities and organizations.Įxample: I’m a coda, so keep in mind that ASL is my first language.Ĭoda is an acronym formed from the first letter in each word of the phrase child of deaf adult(s). The word coda is most often used by children of deaf adults themselves, as a way to self-identify, as well as by organizations composed of such members. Coda can also be used as an adjective, as in coda culture or CODA organizations. It’s typically used as a noun to refer to such a person, as in As codas, we have a unique connection to the Deaf community. However, some may use the capitalized form Deaf in all cases, including when spelling out the meaning of the acronym CODA.Ĭoda is pronounced as a word and not as individual letters (that is, not like C-O-D-A). In other contexts, the capitalized form Deaf is typically used in terms referring to the culture or community of deaf people-and sometimes even more specifically to refer to those who use American Sign Language (ASL) as a primary means of communication. The term child of deaf adult(s) uses the word deaf in a general way to mean completely or partially without the sense of hearing. (The acronym koda, for kid of deaf adult(s), is sometimes used to distinguish such a person as being under 18.) It does not necessarily refer to a young person-the word child is used to indicate the family relationship, as opposed to the age. Coda is typically used to specifically refer to a hearing person who has a deaf parent or parents or a deaf guardian or guardians. The word coda, or CODA, is an acronym that stands for child of deaf adult(s). Take a screenshot of your whole screen and copy it to the clipboard. Open the next menu to the left, or close a submenu. This is useful for computers with many users, or for those users who keep everything in their home for easy backup. Home is a menu that holds all the contents of your user folder. XMenu does let you make a customized Apple Menu, exactly the way you were used to, by dropping files, folders and aliases into a 'Apple Menu Folder'. Instead it will add one or more menus at the left of the screen. It is not, however, a 'haxie' and it will not change the default Apple menu in any way. XMenu is a program that aims to bring back the OS X Apple menu of old. The only time I ever go there is to change the 'Location'. Now, the Apple menu is a very dusted and rarely visited place for me. Fortunately, the dock and the "launcher" application were quick to step in and fill the gap. But all this went away with OS X, and there was great wailing and gnashing of teeth. It served as a launcher and file browser and a great host of other things. The Apple Menu had been the center point of working with the Mac for many, many users. One of the biggest shocks when OS X came out was the lack of an Apple Menu. Eventually, Robin kills him with a dagger Maid Marian gave him, which ironically the Sheriff himself had given to her. Robin and a few of the other outlaws who managed to avoid capture travel to Nottingham and Robin engages the Sheriff in a sword fight. The Sheriff later forces Maid Marian to marry him and plans to hang the outlaws on the same day. When Robin returns and joins the Sherwood outlaws, the Sheriff sends an army of Celts to raid, kill and capture the majority of them. He murders Robin's father after he refuses to join the Sheriff and sets his sights on taking the throne by wedding and then impregnating Maid Marian (though it's heavily implied he had feelings for her even before trying to marry her for the throne). 1.1 First Confrontation with Robin Hood and His Gangīiography First Confrontation with Robin Hood and His Gangĭuring the crusades, when Robin and the king are away, the Sheriff takes over England with the aid of his cousin, Guy of Gisbourne, Mortianna the witch, and the corrupt Bishop of Hereford. We packed our lunch and an extra one to give away to someone living on the street. We made dinner and baked a few muffins for Nic’s music class. We added an additional visit with a grandma and took them out for coffee. When shopping we would pick a new cleaning product that was good for the environment. Sometimes we combined our gives with a chore. Grocery shopping, Nic’s music classes, cleaning the house, cooking dinner, visiting grandmas. Sure we had necessary chores that needed to be done. This exercise let us prioritize our time and how we wanted to spend it. We would set out going to the park to pick up garbage, dropping off our recycling, going to the local pet shelter to drop off blankets, shopping for clothes at the local thrift store, making a bird feeder to help the birds. Every Monday Nic and I would plan our giving for the week. And note, we never intended to live a simple life and be happy. Giving Every Day Helps Create A Simple Life Giving made us happier and life became easier. It all seemed like magic at the time, but after researching the benefits of giving every day it all became clear. Our daily gives gave us time to breathe, we set aside up to 30 minutes for our daily give (sometimes less) and the day became more manageable. Huh? Yup, by planning our daily gives for the week each Monday we felt we had more time. What I mean by a simple life is a life that is easier to handle, it is pared back, we did less but seemed to do more. I cleaned out the clutter in my mind and my day to make room for giving and the simple life appeared, just appeared. When Nic and I started our first week of giving, I did find life to slow to down. My idea was to give back to the world every day, and boy did I ever get a big surprise. I wanted to spend quality time with my son and take time to breathe when we did things together. We hear about the simple life but what does that mean? How can it make you happier and how do you get started? We started this journey in 2010 when my son was three. Morris: Giancarlo SabogalĪs psychic intern and radio enthusiast Morris we have Giancarlo Sabogal. Lizzie: Grace KaufmanĪs punk rocker intern Lizzie we have Grace Kaufman, who’s appeared in a myriad of cartoons and live-action productions, ranging from several Mickey Mouse cartoons to the much more serious The Last Ship. DePaul’s an expert at gravelly-voiced characters like Truman, evidenced by his role as Samuel Hayden in DOOM, though he’s also an accomplished live performer, appearing on late-night shows hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and James Corden. Truman Zanotto: Darin DePaulĪs the Grand Head of the Psychonauts and Lili’s dad, we have Darin DePaul. Brooks has provided backup voices in lots of cartoons, though her most prominent recent roles are as Bumblebee in DC Super Hero Girls and Teela in the recent He-Man reboot. Hollis Forsythe: Kimberly BrooksĪs the super-serious Second Head of the Psychonauts, we have Kimberly Brooks. Next, here are some of the major players from the new cast. Kaye’s had a long and successful career, and as his role as Ford may imply, he has an affinity for older characters such as Grandpa Max in Ben 10. Ford Cruller: David KayeĪs the founding Psychonaut with the fractured mind, Ford Cruller, we once again have David Kaye. Once again playing the fun-loving levitator of the Psychonauts is Alexis Lezin. You can see him right now as the bumbling duo of Needleman and Smitty in Disney’s Monsters at Work. Despite what his serious demeanor as Sasha may imply, Stanton’s got some serious range. Returning as the expert psychic scientist and one of Raz’s mentors is Stephen Stanton. While he doesn’t have many starring roles, you may have heard Jameson in passing, as he’s provided NPC lines for a bunch of different games in the past decade. Pulling double duty as two reformed(ish) villains from the first game is Nick Jameson. Rapp’s been in and out of the business in recent years, though you may remember her as Lily in The Walking Dead: The Final Season. Raz’s girlfriend and the daughter of the Psychonauts’ Grand Head is played by Nikki Rapp. Horvitz is best known for his work as Zim in Invader Zim, though he’s been making waves recently in his role as Moxie in the web series Helluva Boss. Our protagonist, Razputin “Raz” Aquato, runaway circus acrobat and psychic prodigy, is played by Richard Horvitz. The Psychonauts 2 Voice Actors Razputin Aquato: Richard Horvitz We’ll start with the returning cast from the first game, and move on to some of the major players from the new cast. Here are the voice actors for Psychonauts 2. Those actors brought every character to life with an expertly tuned sense of purpose and personality, and while it’s been sixteen years, the cast’s talent hasn’t diminished in the slightest. Part of what made the original Psychonauts so memorable (besides its awesome art design, hilarious script, excellent platforming, and a bunch of other things) was its talented cast of voice actors. |
